How to start a Website to sell your products and/or services

We want your feedback! We're considering a FREE webinar this month as an early holiday gift to you, our public and want to make sure that we include topics that you will be interested in.

We'd like for you to leave us some comments so that we can put our final list together, create the presentation, and present it to you. The webinar will take place over the Internet and a conference call will be made available (toll charges may apply depending on where you live).

We'll make all announcements here on our Blog, so make sure you subscribe to the Blog before you leave this page.

Topics for consideration include all of the following:
  1. The basics of domain names. What they are. How to acquire one. How to choose the right name.
  2. The basics of hosting. What is a hosting account. What is normally included. How to pick a hosting company. What do the different packages mean.
  3. How to decide on your branding and your logo. The difference between Raster and Vector graphics in designing your logo.
  4. How to pick a slogan that will stick.
  5. How to start a website. Doing it yourself vs. letting a professional do it for you.
  6. Major mistakes your first time out. How to avoid them.
  7. Template based websites vs. custom websites. What's the difference?
  8. Static websites vs. Dynamic websites? What the difference?
  9. How do you sell products online? What pieces do you need to get started?
  10. How do you submit your website to the search engines? What's involved?

Whether you already have a website or you need a new website, you won't want to miss this event. We'll have answers to some of the questions you've probably been holding onto, but didn't know who to ask.

Great blog topic.

Want to add some real value? Educate potential website owners (or at least e-commerce website owners) about shopping carts - what to look for, what to avoid, which ones provide Web 2.0 functionality options, which site managers make it easiest to do SEO adjustments, etc.

Hindsight is always 20-20 and in retrospect, while there are many aspects of our current provider with which we am very pleased, we wish had done more in-depth research upfront. Part of the challenge of being new, however, is "not knowing what you don't know," or who to ask - and even if you had ideas of who to ask - a better idea of who to trust.

Wouldn't a 'Consumers Report' of the e-commerce industry be interesting? We'd pay to subscribe to that. Or an aggregator service where business owners rated the providers and suppliers which whom they work (it's a Web 2.0 world, right?).

This may be an area that is outside your current expertise, but another major challenge is finding true wholesale suppliers. There is so much deception in this space that it is concerning. We find companies marketing themselves as 'wholesalers' who buy from some of the wholesalers that we do!

We finally came across Wholesale Brands, which seems to be a reputable source for true wholesalers, liquidators, dropshippers and suppliers, but haven't joined yet due to cost and timing. We did join Saleshoo earlier this year, and have found some true Wholesalers there, but still also some middlemen.

Good advice is also rare - or described another way - so abundant (through a proliferation of advertising and options) that it is very difficult again to know who to listen to or trust. We opened our webstore with a long tail strategy... a broad product line from which we do not expect to sell a lot of one thing, but a little of everything. In retrospect, we wish we had picked a strong niche and expanded with additional niche sites over time. As you probably know well, this would have been much smarter from an SEO standpoint, especially for organic search results. So far, I have seen only one company, SBI (site build it) that leads potential site owners through this entire thought process.

There are many other topics that could be discussed... one other 'top of mind' issue is the choice of company formation, sales tax IDs, etc.

So, if you are going to write about "How to start a website to sell your products and services," it ought to be a series, in my opinion, and address the scope of issues that are better tackled by new online business owners upfront, rather than massaged and reworked over time.

This would be very valuable service or advice, in our opinion. Hope you find the feedback helpful.

You have certainly given us a great deal to consider for future webinars and blogs. This was a wonderful and thorough post.

From your post alone, I can think of at least 5 possible webinars and about a dozen possible blog entries to research and write about.

Thanks so much for your comment. I certainly appreciate it.
